How to Clean a Hookah: A Complete Guide for Every Part

Hookah cleaning is something most users either put off or do superficially. But regular, proper cleaning directly extends the life of your hookah and ensures you get the same clean taste every session. A dirty hookah — with accumulated tobacco residue, moisture, and odor — will ruin even the highest quality tobacco.

In this guide, we walk through how to clean each part of your hookah correctly, what to watch out for depending on the material, and the most common mistakes people make.

How Often Should You Clean It?

Short answer: after every use. Moisture left inside the water chamber and stem creates a breeding ground for bacteria and unpleasant odors over time. The hose should also be rinsed after every session.

Deep cleaning - washing each part separately, should be done once a week, or every few sessions during heavy use.

Stainless Steel Parts

The vast majority of Oduman hookahs are made from 304-grade stainless steel, the same steel grade used in quality kitchen equipment like forks, spoons, and pots. As a result, stainless steel parts are highly durable and easy to clean.

Hand washing: Rinse with warm water. Use a soft brush to clean interior surfaces if needed. If you use soap or detergent, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water — detergent residue will affect the taste of your next session.

Dishwasher: Stainless steel parts are dishwasher safe. A practical alternative for those who prefer not to hand wash.

Important: Never put the glass base in the dishwasher. The sudden temperature change causes the glass to crack or shatter. The glass base should always be cleaned by hand using room temperature water.

Aluminum Parts

Oduman's aluminum hookahs go through an anodizing process. Anodizing is an electrochemical treatment that protects the aluminum surface both inside and out. The result is a material that is more resistant to corrosion, harder to scratch, and significantly longer-lasting.

On many competing brands' aluminum hookahs, this coating is applied only to the exterior — or not at all. On Oduman's aluminum hookahs, the coating covers both the inner and outer surfaces, which makes a real difference in terms of durability and ease of cleaning.

That said, aluminum is more sensitive to moisture than stainless steel. After washing, all surfaces must be dried completely. Aluminum parts left wet can develop corrosion over time.

Glass Base

Rinse the glass base after every use. Always use room temperature wate, hot or cold water creates sudden temperature differences on the glass and can weaken its structural integrity over time.

For tobacco residue and odor that has built up inside the base, add a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice, swirl it around, then rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. Avoid hard brushes - they can scratch the glass surface.

Silicone Hose

The silicone hose should be washed after every use. Run warm water through it — avoid very hot water. Moisture and tobacco residue left in the hose after a session will negatively affect the taste of your next one.

Users who smoke strong flavors like double apple will often notice this: the smell can linger in the silicone hose. In this case, pour a small amount of lemon juice or white vinegar into the hose, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.

After cleaning, leave the hose hanging so all the water inside can drain and dry out, this is important. A damp environment left inside the hose encourages bacterial growth.

Traditional Hose (For Those Using an Adapter)

Oduman hookahs come with a silicone hose. However, for users who prefer a traditional leather hose via an adapter, an important warning: never wash traditional hoses.

Traditional leather hoses contain a metal coil inside to hold their shape. When wet, this coil rusts ,and a rusted metal coil creates an extremely harmful smoking environment. To clean a traditional hose, simply wipe the outside with a dry cloth. That is sufficient.

Common Mistakes

Putting the glass base in the dishwasher: The glass and the metal parts bonded to it have different thermal expansion rates. Sudden temperature changes cause the glass to crack or shatter. Always wash the glass by hand using room temperature water.

Leaving aluminum parts wet: Even with anodizing protection, prolonged moisture can trigger corrosion on aluminum. Dry thoroughly after washing.

Washing a traditional hose: The metal coil inside will rust and create a health hazard. Only wipe the outside.

Leaving the hose wet: After washing, the silicone hose should not be used or stored until it is completely dry. Leave it hanging so the water drains out.

Leaving detergent residue: If you wash with soap or detergent, rinse with plenty of water. Residue will carry into the taste of your next session.

A Final Note

Hookah cleaning is not a chore — it is a habit. Taking a few minutes after each use extends the life of your hookah and ensures a clean, consistent taste every session. Even the highest quality tobacco cannot perform at its best through a dirty hookah.
